About Our Project

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for the Preservation and Promotion of Coastal Cultural Heritage in Kenya (LAIPCH-K).

Project Background

Preserving Lamu & Tana River Memory via AI

The Coastal Communities Cultural Heritage Platform is a research-driven project led by the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) in collaboration with the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and local coastal communities.

Generously funded by the National Research Fund (NRF) under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the initiative (LAIPCH-K) integrates computer science and humanities. We employ 3D photogrammetry, advanced natural language processing (NLP), transcription, and modern UX design to capture coastal heritage before indigenous dialects and oral memories fade away.

Through our custom platforms, researchers, students, and community elders collaborate. Digitized records are approved by Museum curators, ensuring absolute historical correctness, authentic dialect spelling, and respect for heritage values.

Key Research Objectives

AI-Driven Archiving

Apply Natural Language Processing to Kipokomo and Kibajuni dialects to preserve grammatical structures, proverbs, and ecological marine vocabulary.

3D Digital Curation

Create highly detailed 3D photorealistic reconstructions of delicate hand-carved Bajuni river canoes, Pokomo farming baskets, and old household items.

Intergenerational Transfer

Provide primary and secondary schools with CBC-aligned digital downloads, quizzes, and games to keep heritage engaging for young youths.
